There is sometimes the need of surgical assistance to correct orthodontic issues in both adults and children. For this reason, we at DFW Oral Surgeons offer orthodontic assisted surgery options. Common complications of orthodontic treatment and care include decalcification, relapse of treatment results, and root reabsorption. Surgical exposure and guided eruption of impacted teeth are also a common cause of orthodontic surgery.
Guided Eruption of Impacted Teeth
When a tooth is unable to fully erupt from the gums because it runs into a neighboring tooth or structure in the mouth, it is said to be impacted. Impaction often occurs because the tooth that is trying to erupt doesn’t have enough space to do so, or because the angle it is coming in at is improper. The result of a tooth impaction can be manifold – the baby teeth are sometimes not knocked out, the adult teeth are often crowded, and there is a high risk of infection and discomfort. To avoid tooth impaction, we will perform a surgical exposure of the soon to be impacted tooth and a tooth extraction for any baby teeth that ought to be removed.
Once the impacted tooth is exposed, we can guide it into place using a specially designed chain that is anchored both to the braces and the impacted tooth. The chain will guide the tooth into the correct position. Once we have the tooth in the right area, we can ensure it’s proper alignment by adding a bracket to it and applying minor force to it using the braces.
When an incorrect bite is a major concern for a patient, we will sometimes opt for surgical bite correction. Thanks to recent advances in the dental and orthodontic industry’s we can now offer surgical correction of serious bite problems that don’t require lengthy recovery times. Rapid orthodontic correction of serious orthodontic issues that don’t require hospitalization or lengthy recovery times is a big deal! These treatments can involve things like micro cuts in the jaw bone, bone grafting, and rapid tooth movement using braces. Using these methods, we can align your bite and teeth.
Your Comfort Is Key
At DFW Oral Surgeons, your comfort is always our number one concern, which is why we offer a variety of sedation options to help keep you comfy.
