What Are Dental Implants?
Flower Mound, TX
Dental Implants are for the replacement of a tooth root using a titanium metal post. Our surgeon will place the implant directly into your jawbone where the tooth is missing, providing a strong, more permanent solution. Once the post is securely in place and healed, a dental crown is placed on top giving the patient a flawless looking, strong false tooth.
In the past, patients options for tooth replacement consisted of traditional bridges or dentures, dental implants are a longer lasting, stronger, and much more superior option. The implant is made from titanium, which is a metal that is used in surgical repairs all over the human body. Titanium is unique in that it is biocompatible, meaning that it is safe to remain inside the human body. Additionally, with time, through a process called osseointegration, your tissue will fuse with the titanium screw. Permanently bonded to your jawbone, dental implants offer stability, they will not become loose, will not require clips to attach, and will not affect your surrounding teeth. Dental implants offer the look and feel of your natural teeth. Dental Implants offer our patients a secure fit that is more comfortable than any other conventional substitutes. If you would like more information on implants, and to find out if you are a candidate, talk to our surgeons at DFW Dental Surgeons. Generally, implants must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant, but your surgeon what your options are, dental advancements are ongoing.
Common Reasons for Dental Implants
|•||Replacing one or multiple missing teeth
|•||Halting the progression of bone atrophy and maintain healthy bone levels
|•||Providing a strong base for dentures and bridges
|•||Keeping the look and feel of a real tooth after one is missing
|•||To correct any bite issues that can come from teeth shifting to fill the gap of a missing tooth|
How are Dental Implants Placed?Beginning with preparing the site, our surgeon, will open the tissue exposing the bone. Some cases will require a bone graft, which will be accomplished at this point. With sufficient bone, your surgeon will use a specialized drill to create the space needed in the bone to receive the dental implant.
With the bone ready, your oral surgeon will place the implant and then suture the surgical site closed. We will want to see you in the days following the procedure to remove the sutures and check healing. The healing time is a long process, sometimes taking up to six months. Healing includes the process of your natural tissue bonding with the titanium implant. Once the implant is strong, we can place a dental crown over the implant, giving you a strong, natural looking and functioning tooth.
What Can Go Wrong?Dental Implants have a very high success rate, in fact higher than any other dental restoration, with over 95% patient satisfaction. That being said, there are some factors to consider when questioning if this is the right procedure for you.
|•||Patients who smoke experience a much higher rate of failure with dental implants. This is due to thickening of oral tissues and a decrease in blood flow along with a decrease in salivary glands causing a constant dry mouth.
|•||In some patients, their tissues just never bonds with the titanium. There is no way that we can determine if this will be a problem beforehand, but it is a rare occurrence.
|•||Fracture of your titanium post can occur if the healing time was not appropriately given.|
Our surgeon are happy to discuss these variables with you. As with all dental work, proper brushing and flossing will maximize the longevity of your new dental implant.
