Length of Recovery Process for Implants Flower Mound, TX
The recovery process for dental implants is the most important step in stabilizing your implant. We need your body to heal correctly and appropriately. At DFW Oral Surgeons we take the time to ask the right questions and work with our patients to increase their odds in healing timely and thoroughly before surgery is done. We can help you have an implant that is placed correctly.
Before Dental Implant Surgery
The implant surgery itself is fast, but the preparation for surgery can take some time. There are steps before surgery that we can take to increase your chance of high success in the placement of your dental implant.
Dental implants come with many variations; some patients are having a single implant placed, some multiple, some are having a denture secured with implants. There are implants that are designed to be longer, such as those used for implant retained dentures, there are standard sized implants, wider implants, and there are even mini implants.
Before we begin, we meet with the patient and design a treatment plan that is specific to their needs. This means we discuss what is needed, view the patients bone in 3D radiographs to determine the bulk of bone available and create a treatment plan. Each implant procedure is going to be different, just as each of our patients is.
For some patients, we may need to perform a bone graft procedure before placing the implant. This is done to add bulk to their jaw bone and provides us a thicker bone for placing the implant. This is an important step to the overall procedure.
Before treatment, we will need to review your medical history. Healing correctly is vital to the success of this treatment, we will need to make sure that the patient can heal properly. There are medications and diagnosis that can decrease the ability to heal, we can advise you on how to adjust this. Patients who smoke, who have uncontrolled diabetes, or are engaged in cancer treatment, will need to make adjustments before surgery.
Following Dental Implant Surgery
Following the placement of your dental implant, we will provide the patient with post-op care instructions. This will include information in the days following, such as symptoms to be aware of such as bleeding, swelling and signs of infection. We will also advise the patient on how to care for their implant while it is stabilizing.
The soft tissue will heal in a matter of days, but the bone will take longer to heal. The bone will heal and grow around the implant through a process called osseointegration, helping it become a firm part of the bone. This bone healing process is important to the stability of the implant, and we need it to occur without being disrupted. We will advise you on the right types of foods to eat, and for how long you will need to show caution. Additionally, we will want to see you and check the status of your implant as it fuses with the bone.
Following our guidelines, we can help you have a permanent post in your mouth to stabilize a dental crown or to serve as part of an anchor to a dental bridge, partial denture or even full denture.
