At DFW Oral Surgeons, we believe dental implants are the ideal solution for patients missing one or more teeth. Thanks to clinical and technological advancements, implant treatment is safer and more effective than ever before. If you choose dental implants, there are a few things you should know.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant consists of three components: the screw, the abutment, and the restoration. The screw is usually made from titanium or zirconia. During a minor surgery, John C. Shillingburg, DDS will make a small incision into the gums and embed the implant into the jawbone. Once the implant is in place, we will suture the incision.

Over the next six to nine months, the implant and your bone will fuse together during osseointegration. Osseointegration is largely responsible for the many benefits of dental implants. The abutment, a support structure that links the screw to the restoration, usually cannot be attached until osseointegration is complete.

Once the abutment is in place, we will make an impression of the area. The impression will be sent to a dental laboratory. There, the technicians will use it to create your final restoration, a process that can take upwards of two weeks. In the meantime, we may give you a temporary restoration to protect the implant site. Once the restoration is complete, we will permanently attach it to the abutment.

Dental implants can be used to support a single crown, a fixed bridge, All on 4 treatment, and a full-mouth restoration. Each restoration requires a unique number of implants. For a fixed bridge, we will place an implant for each missing tooth. If this is not possible, we may also suspend a pontic between two implants. Full mouth options may require anywhere from two to eight implants per arch, depending on the type of restoration.

The Importance of Osseointegration

Osseointegration creates a powerful bond between the implant and your jawbone. This bond is responsible for the comfort, durability, and longevity associated with dental implants. Because of osseointegration, you can experience:
•  Comfort. Unlike other restoration, you will be able to eat your favorite foods with confidence and comfort.
•  Longevity. Implants have been proven to last for many decades, or even a lifetime.
•  Durability. Most implant-supported restorations are made from porcelain or zirconia. These materials are extremely durable and aesthetically pleasing.
•  Better speech. Because the implant becomes a part of you, you never have to worry about embarrassing slips, when you speak, smile, or laugh.
•  Bone preservation. Osseointegration ensures your implant provides physical stimulation to the jawbone. This stimulation prevents the bone from deteriorating over time. Bone deterioration usually occurs after a tooth has been lost.
•  Convenience. Because the implant mimics the root of a natural tooth, it can be treated as a natural tooth. You will be able to brush and floss your implant restoration as you would your natural teeth.
