Sinus Lifts and Dental Implants

Woman Smiling after getting a Sinus Lift and Dental Implants by her Flower Mound oral surgeon at DFW Oral Surgeons.Dental implants are a unique solution to tooth loss that provides patients with an alternative to bridges and dentures. They have quickly become one of the most popular solutions, providing several significant benefits over traditional treatments. This treatment uses small titanium posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone, which fuses to the posts as you heal. While an incredibly successful treatment, implants rely on your jawbone for success and stability. In your upper jaw, insufficient bone mass not only affects the stability of your implants, but it can also affect your sinus cavities. At DFW Oral Surgeons, we can provide strength for dental implants while also protecting your sinus cavities, with a sinus lift.

The Importance of Your Jawbone for Implants

Dental implants have a very high success rate of about 98%. However, to be successful, your jawbone needs to fuse with the posts. Following tooth loss, your jawbone begins to lose bone mass. This is due to a loss of stimulation. Your jawbone receives stimulation from your teeth that let your body know that nutrients are needed. Without stimulation, your body sends fewer nutrients to your jaw. When this happens, your jawbone begins to lose bone mass and grows weaker. When your jawbone is too weak, it cannot properly fuse, or even fuse at all, to the implant posts. This results in loose posts and possible implant failure.

What is a Sinus Lift?

In your upper jaw, the loss of bone mass does more than just affect osseointegration. The roots of some of the back teeth in your upper jaw reach toward your maxillary sinus cavities. After you lose these teeth, the bone separating your jaw from your sinus cavities becomes thin. If it becomes too thin, attempting to place an implant can result in piercing the sinus cavities, which can then lead to chronic sinus infections and other issues.

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that is performed to restore strength to your jawbone while also protecting your sinus cavities. This procedure is done under a local anesthetic and sedation. Small incisions are made in your gums near the molars and premolars. Next, incisions are made in your jawbone. Specialized tools are used to push up the floors of your sinus cavities, and bone graft material is placed in the empty space underneath. Your surgical wounds are sutured closed. Once you have fully healed from your sinus lift, we are then able to begin the process of placing your dental implants.

Types of Bone Grafts for a Sinus Lift

There are several different types of bone grafts that may be used to perform your sinus lift. These bone grafts include:
•  Autografts. An autograft uses bone mass from your own body.
•  Allografts. An allograft uses bone mass taken from a same-species, in this case, human, donor.
•  Xenografts. A xenograft uses bone material taken from a different species. In many cases, the bone is harvested from a cow.

With a sinus lift, we not only restore strength to your jawbone, but we are also able to protect your sinus cavities, increasing the success of dental implants. For more information, and to schedule your consultation, call DFW Oral Surgeons at (972) 539-1491 today.
