Macrodontia is a condition in which one or more teeth grow to be a larger size than what a normal tooth should be. It is extremely rare for someone to have all of their teeth too large.
In most cases, it is a small number of teeth or a single tooth that is larger than the rest. When someone has macrodontia, they might want to do something about it for cosmetic reasons.
After all, if one tooth is larger than the rest it could be noticeable. Appearance is not the only reason to do something about a tooth that is larger than the rest. It could throw off your bite, and it could also crowd the other teeth in your jaw. If you or someone who you know has one or more teeth that are larger than they should be, come in to see us. There are things that we can do to help.
Wait and See
One of the most common things that we do with macrodontia is to wait and see. If the large tooth does not affect the other teeth, does not change your bite, and does not affect your appearance, we might decide to leave it alone. We will keep an eye on it and see if the situation changes and adjust our recommend course of action accordingly.
Other Dental Treatments
If we do decide to do something about the tooth, there are different treatments available. For some people, braces will do the trick. Other times we will shave and contour the tooth so that it is the normal size. Extraction is sometimes a possibility, although we would like to avoid that if we can.
If you have one or more teeth that is bigger than normal, come in and talk to us about it. We will let you know what the options are for your situation, since everyone is different.
